1800s cruise ship. Trans-Atlantic passage was still primarily one way although affluent passengers traveled back and forth between England and New York for business or holiday. On steamships Steerage or Tween Decks and Third Class was the default choice of many immigrants from the 1850s through the 1930s. Seafaring is a tradition that encompasses a variety of professions and ranks.
